So what’s the story with the unconventional layers here? Well I wanted to wear something nice but fun to a special dinner I was recently invited to at Via Umbria. If you’re not familiar with this Georgetown gem, it’s a charming Italian market that sells everything from wine to gourmet cheese and charcuterie to hand-painted ceramics to prepared food. So that’s what I knew about it prior to attending the dinner. Apparently there was far more to this adorable “little” market than meets the eye…
When you first walk into Via Umbria, it’s hard not to notice the cute decor, cool-looking pastas and Italian cookies, and, of course, the fun little blue vehicle featured prominently in the front. What I didn’t know is that upstairs there’s a kitchen and dining area, specifically for chef’s dinners like the one I attended, which they host regularly and are very reasonably-priced. There’s also an outdoor patio that leads to a gallery area that can rented out for private events. You can sign up for cooking classes, join them for movie night (and a meal), and even a cheese of the month party (be still my heart!). You can tell Via Umbria has truly been a labor of love for owners Bill and his wife Suzy. They’re great friends with their suppliers, often hosting them for prolonged periods in their home in DC. Over the course of the evening, they shared many stories of their (often food-centric) adventures in Italy, where they own a beautiful estate in Umbria. If this idyllic lifestyle sounds as appealing to you and is did to me, you’ll be intrigued to know their Umbrian home is available for vacation rental. The food I ate at our dinner was warm and earthy, delicious and beautiful, without being overly fussy or pretentious – exactly the inviting vibe you get from the market itself. There’s definitely a sense of community that comes with this lovely place and I have to say I wouldn’t mind being a part of it!
