R. sent me this link and I’m intrigued. Stephanie Syjuco created a website in 2006 to ask other crocheters to create crochet replicas (“knock-offs”) of designer handbags. A sociological project, as well as a political one (wanting to draw attention to the problem of counterfeit in third world countries), Stephanie was fascinated by the human desire to own counterfeit goods (see Wisconsin Ave). I thought it was particularly interesting that Stephanie calls into question whether a counterfeit handbag becomes “original” when one creates it himself and takes creative liberties in doing so (i.e. using different colors/mediums to create). How very post-modernist!
