I’m going to be honest, work is my least favorite “occasion” to dress for. My style is where I like to express myself creatively, so I’ve always chaffed at the idea of having to dress with restrictions. That being said, over the years I’ve come to appreciate the benefits of investing in good workwear staples that can be eye-catching, but also appropriate.

Take the trouser, for example. By playing with proportions, you can create an cool silhouette without going crazy with pattern or color. This allows you to invest in pants that go with everything, but certainly aren’t boring. When I spotted these pants at the new M.M. LaFleur pop-up at DC’s Union Station, I knew these would be a versatile piece I would wear forever. The wide-legged flare cut is super flattering and hits at just the right point of your ankle. The coolest thing about them? They have snap built into the hem so you can adjust the length if you want more of a cropped look.

And the humble black blazer. Almost every women’s wear line sells one, but we all know not all blazers are created equal (and I’ve seen some doozies over the years!). A flattering fit is so important if you want a blazer that’s going to last and that doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be expensive. The one I’m wearing above is actually Zara from many many years ago. The length and fabric are timeless and the subtle power shoulder gives a little edge to just about any outfit. I did some searching and found two very similar options that are highly-reviewed. The closest match being this one from Everlane and a close second is this one from Nordstrom.

You can see I styled this look with a graphic print tee designed by local artist Meg Biram. Perhaps a bit more business casual than some offices will allow, but I’ve also worn this very same look with a silk blouse for a more conservative look. Once you’ve got two good basics to work with, switching up the tops is the fun part!

Those pants are amazing! If I still worked in an office they would totally be on my shopping list! Sadly I wouldn’t have much occasion to wear them otherwise as I just default to jeans all the time, haha

I do agree when it comes to blazers, cut is far more important than price, and I love the gold detailing on the shoes and bag – dressing for work can have it’s pitfalls, but sometimes lets your creativity shine in unexpected ways.
