maintaining red and orange hair color

This photo was taken three weeks after my last hair appointment and you can see my hair color is still very much alive and well. In the past, the orangey-reddish tint that my stylist applied over my highlights would be gone after a week. She had told me the tint would would wash out, so I always assumed it was just a fun, temporary thing. A recent read of Sea of Shoes’ super helpful post on caring for red hair made me do a head slap to the forehead. I had no idea that red hair color faded faster than other hair colors and was harder to maintain. So after my most recent hair appointment, I approached things differently. First step (and this is a super easy one), was to start washing my hair with cold water. I know it sounds brutal to those of us that love a hot shower, but it makes such a difference to turn down the temp when washing your hair (I also think it makes it shinier and smoother). The next step was to find better products for protecting my hair color. Juice Organics had sent me their Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner so I made it a point to use them consistently. I’m not exaggerating when I say I saw a major difference using these products versus other (more expensive) ones that claim to protect hair color. My hair color is still visible over 6 weeks after getting it done and all it took was two very easy changes to my daily hair care routine!

I always tried my best to wash my hair with cold water but this winter season made me resort to hot showers more and I saw my hair color fading away fast! I can definitely vouch for the tip you shared!
I hope you’re having a smooth sailing week! 🙂

Thanks for the confirmation! It is rough during the winter, I feel you on that. This morning’s shower felt particularly cold when there’s snow outside on the ground – worth it for the smoothy, shiny hair though!
