Turtlenecks are kind of the unsung hero of basics – once regarded as frumpy, strictly regulated to wintertime, and unfortunate fodder for embarrassing family portraits. But I prefer to see them in a different light: shape-flattering, regal, maybe even a little empowering. And I’m pleased to see the general fashion community has embraced them as well; now regarded as the essential layering piece for silk dresses and cami tops. Snag 4 of my current favorites below!

I love them and have learned the hard way (hello there family portraits!) that finding the right one has to do with the fit. For me, its the chunkier ones, lighter ones make me look like a sausage ;

I must admit, I don’t wear turtle necks as often as I did when I was younger. However, I love them! So chic and such a wardrobe staple, for sure!

I hope I’m not too late on this post to add my love and respect for the turtleneck !

Funnily I hated them as a child, especially woollen knits that had a higher, chunkier collar than the lighter cotton/lycra ones. At the time they felt a little overpowering especially when they literally came up over my chin and jawline, but they kept me warm and cosy.

I guess I sort of grew into them and from about the age of twelve they became my favourite winter wardrobe piece, so much my friends would tease me mercilessly when I’d turn up at school wearing one in early autumn while everyone else was still happily wearing T-shirts and blouses šŸ™‚
