Rolling off a fulfilling weekend of errand-running and good food - olive oil shopping at Litteri's, leisurely grazing at Union Market, cold weather-fighting dining at Mala Tang, and now comfort food-eating with some homemade chicken parm and spicy tomato sauce.

How was your weekend? Eat anything good?

all about Ulyana

Yup, it's another post professing my love and adoration for Ulyana Sergeenko. Whenever I see an Ulyana outfit (street style or design), I feel like I'm transported to another era. I mean, we're talking about a woman who somehow managed to revive the apron as something of a romantic accessory. So of course I wouldn't expect anything less from her Spring Couture show. Inspired by classic novels such as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and The Headless Horseman, the whole experience looked incredibly dreamy. Not to mention two of my favorite fashion icons, Natalia Vodianova and Dita von Teese, were in attendance. Win!

I don't think I've ever had bad luck with a Net-a-Porter sale and this Rag & Bone dress and these Oscar de la Renta earrings are further proof. Finding a black dress that's conservative enough to be work-friendly, yet interesting enough to wear out is kind of insane. As for the earrings, well, given my hairstyle, I've found I have to "go big or go home" if I want them to be visible at all. And since we're talking about Oscar de la Renta, can I add that I'm kind of falling in love with all of his jewelry? Between the beautiful ring B got me last year and these newly-acquired earrings, I'm thinking I'm going to have to start collecting.

Favorite Mac 'n' Cheese

macaroni and cheese

macaroni and cheese

Homemade macaroni and cheese is one of my favorites, but I'm picky. I've tried a few fancier recipes, but this basic one is the best. And the best thing about basic recipes is that they're very easy to tweak if one is so inclined. You could definitely experiment with different cheeses or add fun things like broccoli or bacon if you wanted to get fancy.

For this recipe, you will need:

  Kosher salt
  2 cups elbow macaroni
  2 eggs, beaten
  2 cups evaporated milk
  1/2 cup butter, melted
  1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  2-1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar
  1 cup bread crumbs
  1 teaspoon paprika
  1/4 cup grated Parmesan

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook, stirring occasionally until it is almost tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Drain, rinse with cold water, and set aside.

In a large bowl, beat the eggs with the milk, 1/4 cup melted butter, the cayenne pepper, and a teaspoon of salt.

Put half the macaroni into a buttered 2-quart casserole and top with half the cheddar cheese. Repeat. Pour the milk mixture over the macaroni and cheese.

In a small bowl, mix the bread crumbs with the paprika, the remaining butter, and the Parmesan. Sprinkle the bread crumb mixture over the macaroni and bake until brown and bubbly, 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm.

Animals and more gratuitous sunset shots. Sorry, in New Mexico it's like shooting fish in a barrel. Pretty the cow is all grown up now, while guinea hens are the newest addition to B's parents' menagerie. Interestingly enough, they're very good watchdogs and sound the alarm when anyone arrives (no matter what the hour).

Also, I promise I'll take a break from the red boots for a little bit (maybe).

Momentarily interrupting the New Mexico photos to share some snaps of this weekend's trip to the Hirshhorn to check out the Ai Weiwei exhibition (it's awesome; go see it if you haven't yet). Apparently going for a Margot Tenenbaum-ish look in honor of the occasion. It's hard to tell in these photos, but the skirt I'm wearing is blue velvet (I love it).
