I seem to be having good luck with flats lately. Weird, right? I've had my eye on these for a while and couldn't be more pleased that I finally decided to take the plunge. Very comfy and elegant.

It's times like these that I pat myself on the back for not editing my closet as harshly as I probably should. Last year I briefly considered chucking this old t-shirt along with a few other concert tees I was closely guarding for no other reason but nostalgia. Suffice to say I'm feeling awfully smug about its reintroduction into general rotation...

Delmonico Chicken

Delmonico Chicken

My mom and grandmother have been making this casserole for as long as I can remember. It's a retro dish and very comforting. I'm not entirely sure where this recipe originally came from, but I think it might have been Toll House Tried and True Recipes. True to form, I made some of my own little changes to this recipe :-).

For this recipe, you will need:

13 oz package of penne pasta*
2 chicken breasts, cut into quarter inch slices
  10 oz. sliced white mushrooms
a couple sprigs of fresh thyme, minced
  1 clove of garlic, minced
2 cups mild cheese blend (I used a Mexican blend, but you can use whatever you like)
  2 cups hot milk
  2 tablespoons butter
  2 tablespoons flour
  1/4 teaspoon mustard
  extra virgin olive oil
  salt
  pepper
  paprika

**The original recipe calls for egg noodles and I fully encourage you to use them if you have them.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.

Bring pot of water to a boil and cook pasta while you complete the next few steps.

Season chicken with salt and pepper. Lightly brown in 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. When chicken is cooked through, remove from skillet and set aside.

Reduce heat to medium. Using the same skillet, add enough olive oil to lightly the coat the pan. Add mushrooms, stirring and scraping bottom of the pan to incorporate all of the tasty bits. Cook for 4-5 minutes until mushrooms begin to brown. Add the garlic and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the mushrooms are tender. Add thyme, salt, and pepper and cook for one more minute to combine. Remove from heat and set aside.

Over a double-boiler, melt the butter and slowly whisk in the flour, stirring constantly (no lumps!) for 3 minutes until combined and golden. Add the mustard and 1 teaspoon of salt. Slowly add the milk, continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Stir until thickened. Slowly combine with melted cheese until sauce is thick and smooth.

In a buttered baking dish, layer half the noodles, then the chicken and mushrooms, then the remaining noodles. Pour sauce over the mixture, and sprinkle with paprika.

Brown in the oven and serve bubbling hot with grated parmesan cheese. Enjoy!

This past weekend, B and I revisited the National Building Museum, one of my favorites. Just a gorgeous building in general and I love the seeing the old pictures and models of DC in the Washington: Symbol and City exhibit. Definitely worth checking out if you've never been before.

tried and true

In response to my Burberry Body post, Franziska asked if I had posted an outfit with my Burberry trench. Sadly, not in a long time and this a fault of mine, not the coat's, because I do wear it quite often. I think, since I've had it so long, I kind of take it for granted as a statement piece and think of it more as just a friendly favorite. But today, things are going to change and I'm going to do right by this loyal trooper, who has traveled far and wide with me, all the while suffering numerous indignities, like being shoved unceremoniously in the overhead bin, under the train seat, under the bus seat (I know, I'm horrible), the L.L. Bean backpack - the list goes on. Through all this, it has never once complained.

I've noticed the same "friendly favorite" usability from the perfume, which I've been using quite a bit lately. Kind of a no-brainer now when I'm heading out the door.

And while we're talking Burberry, don't forget there's still time to enter the #BurberryBodyInspirations contest. More details here!

Sorry for the temporary radio silence, but sometimes I just need a little break from computers. I've been spending quite a bit of time in this old dress, which I recently rediscovered. I think I might have taken this beautiful pattern for granted.
