Looking back fondly to days when I was healthy and full of life. B and I have been temporarily immobilized by some horrible stomach bug and, though these photos were only taken this past weekend, it feels like ages ago. Hump day has really humped me this time...

Maybe I'll hang on, if only for the red boots.

Kale and Cucumber Slaw

Kale and Cucumber Slaw

I recently discovered what i haven't cooked yet - a blog by local chef Jonathan Bardzik. Among the many delicious-looking recipes, I spotted one for a raw kale salad, an idea that intrigues me, yet at the same time, semi-terrifies me. I know raw kale is all the rage lately, but quite frankly, it sounds as appetizing as a plate of grass cuttings. Preconceived notions aside, I like the idea of eating veggies raw and not cooking every last nutrient out of them, so I decided to give this one a whirl. Who knew kale salad could be so delicious? I've made it twice in the past week and actually find myself craving it (especially on hot days).

I made a couple small changes to this recipe, like nixing the cilantro and adding the cucumbers towards the end to keep them crunchy. B also noted that it's really more of a slaw than a salad, since we found letting it sit for an hour or more allowed the kale to absorb the dressing and lose the bitterness.

For this recipe, you will need:

    1 clove garlic minced*
    1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar
1 tbs mint, finely chopped    2/3 cup olive oil
    zest from 1 lime
    Tabasco or comparable hot sauce
1/2 pound kale, ribbed and thinly sliced
    1/2 cup minced cucumber
    sugar
    salt and pepper

**Jonathan said to mash the garlic with 1/2 tsp coarse sea salt, but I didn't do this because I am lazy. It tasted fine minced, but feel free to do it the right way.

Whisk together garlic, vinegar, cucumber, mint, and a dash of hot sauce. Let dressing rest for at least 5 minutes for flavors to blend.

Whisk in olive oil and lime zest. Season to taste with sugar, salt and pepper.

Dress kale and cucumbers and let sit for an hour or more. I made this last night and let it sit for two hours before serving and it tasted great!

I clearly seem to have an affinity for orange and navy lately, so when I was perusing the magical rack of Meeps clothing that Cathy picked out for me, this little baby caught my eye. There's something ladylike, yet at the same time cartoonish about this jacket that somehow balances it out perfectly. Naturally I had to take it for a spin at the Meeps opening, where I saw quite a few items who might like to join it :-).

So what's the plan for the weekend? Run away and escape forever?

B and I finally checked out the Heurich House, which we've been meaning to do for ages. If you're not familiar, it's a Victorian mansion built by Christian Heurich, who owned a large brewery that used to be on the land where the Kennedy Center now stands. Highly encourage you to check it out if you've never been.

Meeps style

I'm so excited to share the outfit that I styled as part of a recent collaboration with The President Wears Prada and Meeps, one of my favorite DC area vintage stores. The afternoon was pretty much my ideal: playing with the most enviable selection of vintage pieces in Meeps and Treasury Vintage owner Cathy's equally cool and enviable apartment (she's got a record collection like you've never seen!). This statuesque, open-backed dress was one of said pieces. It's rare to find such an elegant piece that's so easily dressed down with sandals and so comfortable in hot weather.

I'm also excited that Meeps will be reopening this week! I was able to get a sneak peak of the new space and I love the layout. The new store has a stage area that will host a variety of performing arts - such a cool concept! Here are the details for the opening party this Thursday:

Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion Crostini

Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion Crostini

It's been way too long since I posted a recipe, so here's one of my favorite cocktail party finger foods. I admit caramelizing onions can be a bit time-consuming, but it's totally worth it.

For this recipe, you will need:

  2 yellow onions, thinly sliced
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup good quality balsamic vinegar
  2 teaspoon brown sugar
  1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced
1 loaf of French bread, sliced
a soft (preferably tangy), spreadable goat cheese
  extra virgin olive oil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and cook until they begin to color.

Add brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Reduce heat slightly. Continue to cook onions, stirring frequently until they become very dark and (duh) caramelized. Add the minced thyme, salt, and pepper and cook for a minute or two longer.

While the onions are cooling, lightly brush the slices of bread with olive oil. Place in the oven for about 5-10 minutes until golden brown around the edges, flipping once in between.

Let the toasts cool for a minute or two before spreading a dollop of goat cheese on each and top with the caramelized onions. Voilà!

it's a little wild and a little strange

it's a little wild and a little strange

it's a little wild and a little strange

I know it's a little soon to be bitching about "being tired of summer" and I know I'm going to regret it, but dare I say I'm missing dark colors and sparkle? This was my best attempt at making said trends work on a hot muggy day for a good friend's birthday bbq. Much time was spent reminiscing about 90s Nickelodeon shows. Pop quiz: can you finish this line? Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our hearts, and when we think about you...

Burberry Body Eau de Parfum

Buberry Body Eau de Parfum

Burberry Body Eau de Parfum

Burberry Body Eau de Parfum

Burberry Body Eau de Parfum

I was beyond flattered that Lucky and Burberry asked me to be a part of their "Style Scents" program, inspired by Burberry Body Eau de Parfum. My Burberry trench coat has been one of my most prized possessions for a long time now. I found it in a vintage store in Paris and bartered and haggled it down to my student price range. I'm pretty sure it was originally a man's coat, so I had it tailored (once in France, then once again back in the States). And all of this was worth it, because it's never gone out of style and it goes with just about anything.

Such can be said for this fragrance. Works for every situation. Goes with every outfit. "Day to night" is probably one of the most overused phrases in fashion right now, but I'm going to use it again - this fragrance is truly that. Subtle and soft for day, yet sexy enough for night. I love that it's fresh and warm without being overly floral or overpowering.

OK, so here's where you come in:
  • Lucky is asking readers to tell them how Burberry Body makes them feel by snapping a picture inspired by the universe of Burberry Body on Instagram with the hashtag #BurberryBodyInspirations.
  • Two lucky winners will score a Burberry Body gift basket and $150 Burberry gift card to use on a purchase towards one of Burberry's boldest fall looks and potentially be featured within a listing in on the Lucky Lookout pages!
Contest entry form here. This promotion ends September 7th (so get on it)!!

Burberry Body products available at Sephora.

Full disclosure: these photos are actually from the 4th. I'm a bad little blogger, I know. Anyways, this outfit has been another one of my go-to's this summer. This dress, though originally an impulse buy, has proved itself to be somewhat of a reliable staple. Of course, this will only feed future delusions that this is par for the course with impulse shopping (it is not). Problem.
